New Bridal Jewelry and a Whole New Look!
Jewels by Jan has a whole new look! A new format, new colors, new menu and many new features. In addition – we have added an exciting new line of bridal and formal jewelry. We want to be an important part of your wedding day by accessorizing you from head to toe. Not only do we offer our collection of beautiful barefoot sandals, we also offer elegant handcrafted bridal and formal jewelry and an array of sparkling bridal hair accessories.
Your wedding day jewelry will be one of the final items you will put on the day of your beautiful wedding. After searching and finding the perfect dress you’ll want to accessorize it with just the right jewelry that reflects your own personal style.
You may want your bridal jewelry to be very simple and understated like an elegant and feminine pearl necklace. If you love sparkle, bridal jewelry made with Swarovski crystals will be your choice. Victorian or Vintage bridal jewelry is yet another option for the bride who loves the romance of that era.
Whatever “look” you plan for, Jewels by Jan offers bridal jewelry for every discerning bride. We would like to introduce you to our new bridal jewelry designer – Francesca. Francesca started creating jewelry like many designers – by taking a jewelry-making class. Over the past 8 years she has developed skills with a array of mediums. In the past 2 years she has been creating beautiful wedding
jewelry using Swarovski crystals, freshwater pearls, sterling silver and gold-filled findings, to name a few. Her designs range from the traditional pearl necklace to the shine and sparkle of crystal. Some of her designs are original and some come from patterns in which she adds her own twist.
Each piece of Francesca’s lovely bridal jewelry can be found on our new Bridal and Formal Jewelry page at Jewels-by-Jan. Her designs are priced affordable and the quality of her workmanship is excellent.

I may be a bit behind on what’s new but I just found out that I could have a store in Facebook’s Mall. So, Barefoot Sandals 4 U is yet another site where we offer our handcrafted barefoot sandals.. If you have a Facebook account you can access the new site – otherwise you can visit our regular site – Jewels-by-Jan. Social media sites are the newest and easiest way to advertise your products and the best part is…they’re FREEEEE! Who doesn’t like free?
With summer 2011 starting today – June 21st – flip flops and bare feet will be the norm just about anywhere you live. And for those of you who like to have clean, manicured feet, this is the time to show them off. Be sure to read our post on Barefoot Care to get those little tootsies ready for display. Our poor feet take so much abuse that they deserve some TLC (and that means you guys’ too!). If you live near a beach, remember that walking barefoot in the sand is just one of the ways the musculoskeletal structure of your feet and ankles can benefit from.
Both Jewels by Jan and Barefoot Sandals 4 U (4 U only accessible for Facebook members) offer 25+ different barefoot sandal designs. If you want to find a pair to match your swimwear, we have the perfect pair for you; or, if you’re a beach bride planning a beach wedding, we can offer over a dozen different designs ranging from the traditional pearl to rhinestone. And each pair features our distinctive centerpeice that is known as the “medallion-in-the-middle, a unique feature of each of our sandals.

WOW – we have had an incredible first quarter here at Jewels by Jan… This reinforces the fact that beach weddings are still very popular. We recently had a comment from a subscriber that there’s nothing sweeter than a barefoot bride – we have to agree of course. There’s just something cute and adorable about a pretty bride showing off her popsicle toes in a pair of sparkling beach wedding sandals.
This year we’ve seen more multiple pair orders where the bride orders a special pair for herself and then orders color-coordinating sandals for her wedding party in the colors she’s chosen. Since we make matching earrings and double-strand bracelets there’s no need to accessorize further – everything matches perfectly. These also make great bridesmaid gifts. Our wedding collection includes several color options but we also handcraft custom orders. Persimmon has been a favorite this year. If you like pastels our Creme de Menthe, Lavender Romance and Pink Paradise designs are perfect. If you prefer darker shades, Seaside Splendor and Romantic Ruby will catch your eye. And if you want a color combination with pizazz our Tropical Sunset features hot pink and orange glass beads with clear Swarovski crystals.
Whatever our bride wants we accommodate – it’s her day and we want it to be just as special as she does.

You’re probably racking your brain about now trying to figure out what to dress as for Halloween 2010. Well, I have a few ideas for you! Mother Nature went barefoot, just like I did for a 2009 party we attended. Your date or your mate can be Father Time.
Why not go as a belly dancer? Belly dancers sometimes go barefoot and if the party you’re attending will be held inside – order a pair of barefoot sandals to match your costume!
Wilma Flintstone and their baby Pebbles were barefoot.
Daisy Mae from lil’ Abner never wore shoes. Finally, go as a sexy Cupid!
Just remember that all these costume ideas call for bare feet and what would be more appropriate than a custom-made pair of barefoot sandals to match?

Who knew that our feet could be a sexy part of our anatomy? When you think about all the abuse they get every single day how can they stay soft and pretty enough to have sex appeal? Referring to a previous post entitled 12 EASY STEPS TO GET YOUR FEET I SHAPE FOR WEARING BAREFOOT SANDALS, the ONLY way to have beautiful, soft and silky feet is to give them loving care. Like having a pedicure. If you’ve never treated yourself to one, make an appointment….today! Not only will you walk out of the salon with pretty toe’s, you will have had a VERY relaxing experience.
The first time I put on a pair of barefoot sandals, I looked at my feet in a whole different way. There was just something that the sandals did that changed the look of my feet. I’ve always been someone who took care of my feet for as long as I can remember. I’ve always worn polish on my toes because it made me feel – and look – like a girl. So when I slipped into that first pair of bottomless foot jewelry, I instantly felt sexy. Having my feet adorned with crystals made me want to grab a teddy out of the closet!
There are millions of people who feel that a woman with a sexy foot is an incredible turn-on. Add a pair of sparkly barefoot sandals to that woman and you’ll wonder why you’ve never bought a pair for your wife or girlfriend. With a wide variety of colors and designs, Jewels by Jan will give you many choices. Just visit our website and choose the pair that appeals to your taste or her’s – it could add a little excitement to your day (or night).
July 4th – Independance from Shoe's Day!
As we celebrate July 4th as the day the Continental Congress adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence let’s also declare our independence from shoes! Let those tootsies free – wiggle them in the sand, relax and put them up. Get rid of those tight, sweaty shoes that confine you – give your feet their independence. Make it a Jewels by Jan Barefoot Sandals Day!
Now for a bit of history about this great holiday. Did you know that Massachusetts Bay turned into a HUGE glass of iced tea one day in 1773? Yup! Partly as a joke, Samuel Adams and other Bostonians dressed up as Indians and dumped a cargo of the India Company Tea into the Massachusetts Bay. There’s much more to the story of course but that had to be one, big tea party!
What about this: New Castle, Pennsylvania, is home to the Vitale Fireworks Display Company, responsible for more than one thousand fireworks shows every year. 1922 Constantino Vitale brought his expertise at making fireworks from Italy to the United States. He passed his secrets on to his four sons, and since then the company has been making Americans exclaim “ooohhh” and “aaahhhh” at the lighted colors in the sky on July 4 and other occasions. Who knew it was an Italian that started all this!
What do you know about the Liberty Bell? In 1752 the new bell arrived safely from England, but at the first blow from a hammer to test it, it cracked. After being recast twice and used for every event of national importance for over 80 years on July 8, 1835, while tolling for the funeral procession of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, the great bell cracked…for the last time. No one living today knows the voice of the Liberty Bell, for it has never spoken since 1835.
And finally, the song and words to Yankee Doodle were actually a harvesting song in 15th century Holland. In England, the tune was used for a nursery rhyme, and later a song making fun of Puritan church leader Oliver Cromwell, because “Yankee” might be a mispronunciation of the word “English,” and “doodle” refers to a dumb person. So…what would a Yankee Doodle Dandy be? I don’t think I even want to know.
Enjoy the holiday everyone!

A Great Pair of Legs Will Always get a Second Look!
Today I’m not going to write about barefoot sandals although, it IS summer and this is the time to wear them. I thought I would talk about legs. There’s nothing quite as feminine and sexy as a great pair of shapely, smooth and sexy legs. There’s not a man on earth that would deny it. I think pretty legs were meant to be seen and appreciated – and if you were blessed with gorgeous gams, there’s no better time to show them off than summer. Whether you fake-bake, use self-tanners or bronze up those legs naturally at the pool or the beach, tan, bare legs are IN…for now at least. Fashion cycles change and who knows what the trend will be down the road?
But now tell me - what ever happened to pantyhose? You know what I’m talking about - that tight contraption of nylon that seems far too small to stretch half the length of your body. Years ago we wouldn’t dream of wearing a dress without pantyhose. Today, it’s a whole different story. We get ready for an evening out in our sexiest little black dress with nary a thought of wearing pantyhose.
The snag is the generation gap. The culture is changing, casual is “in” and the younger set seem to shun them altogether. Some don’t even own a pair. After all, they’re not the most comfortable undergarment. They can be hot, tight or sag. and the slightest wrong move causes a run. Besides that – they’re expensive. When was the last time YOU pulled on a pair?
Personally, I prefer the bare leg look but I would be remiss if I neglected to point out that there IS a time and a place where bare legs should be covered up. A job interview is one (if you’re wearing a skirt or dress). The other is a cold, winter day. And I suppose our legs CAN still look pretty smooth and sexy in a sheer pair of black nylons. I’d love to hear your comments – do YOU have a love/hate relationship with pantyhose?

Beach Weddings Still Hot in 2010
Wondering if you should have a beach wedding or not? It’s a decision many brides and grooms are pondering. According to the latest bridal industry news – beach weddings are still wildly popular, even though the trend started years ago. Not only is this type of wedding very romantic, it’s also very affordable. With the average cost of a wedding in 2010 between $20,000 – $30,000, this seems like an enormous financial burden. Starting your marriage enslaved by your wedding day debts is not how you want to remember this wonderful occasion.
Think about the glorious, natural setting that provides a gorgeous backdrop, minimizing the need for expensive decorations. Consider the miles and miles of beautiful beaches right here in the U. S., saving the cost of travel to distant lands. Now close your eyes and picture yourselves surrounded by the embrace of your loving family and closest friends in a warm and intimate ceremony.
A beach wedding can also be more casual. Everyone can relax, dress comfortably and affordably. You can even involve family or friends in your ceremony and make them part of the celebration. It’s your day and you can plan it any way that you want, be it romantic, whimsical or even silly. It can be a modern and refreshing change from the typical indoor wedding and it allows your creativity and personalities to shine through.
Give it some thought – think about how unique you can make it and remember that your beach wedding footwear is already taken care of….. by shopping at Jewels-by-Jan!

Read More2010 Shoe Trends for the Tres Chic
Let it be said that a pair of shoes can change your life. Cinderella would certainly agree with that. She might also agree that one can never have too many shoes – especially when each pair can transform us into totally different persona’s.
I just received my March issue of In Style Magazine the other day and over the rainy San Diego weekend I had time to look at the myriad of shoe fashions gracing the pages.
High heel platform shoes seemed to dominate the pages. I’m just not sure if I want to be that tall and for me they would be an accident waiting to happen. But for those of you who are slaves to fashion (and who can balance like a high wire performer) those in the know say they are very chic and sexy.
I also noticed that some shoes never go out of fashion – like stillettos. According to the fashion experts, we should all keep a pair or two in our closet for those nights out on the town or those nights you feel like staying in and slipping into your sexiest teddy.
Lace pumps and fringed footwear were also shown in the magazine, evidence that shoes are constantly changing and evolving.
Personally, there is nothing more feminine and sexy to me than a pair of dressy, skinny-heeled pumps that do more for a woman’s legs than anything else….other than a pair of dazzling barefoot sandals!

The Washington, D.C. -based Dhoonya Dancers held one of their largest performances of the year on Saturday, November 7th at the Montgomery Performing Arts Center in Silver Spring, MD. Have you ever tried to arrange a surprise birthday party for someone long distance? Well, that’s just what I did for my sister (and business partner Pat) in Des Moines, Iowa.
Those birthday’s that end in a zero are special. They’re milestones and they should be celebrated. But Pat doesn’t like to be the center of attention and she made her husband swear he wasn’t doing anything special for this birthday. He was off the hook. Little did she know that it was her sister in San Diego who was sneaking around sending out save the date cards followed by one of her famous poem invitations.
Yep, we got her good! And it was all SO worth it. Everything turned out great and I was able to see all my family in one place! And we were able to work in a few days of Jewels by Jan new product discussions.
After the festivities were over (attended by 50 of her closest relatives and friends) we had the chance to put on our official Jewels by Jan Swarovski crystal tees to take this photo. If you’re a fan of our barefoot sandals, the shirts will be available on our web site soon! They’re made of top-quality cotton-poly with genuine clear and pink Swarovski crystals. What a fabulous way to add some bling to your wardrobe!

Dhoonya Dancers to Showcase Jewels by Jan Foot Jewelry!
Remember the final scene in the movie “Slum Dog Millionaire” when everyone at the train station starts dancing? If you’re like I was, that scene made me want to get up out of my seat and move with them! Now, this form of dance is becoming one of the hottest dance classes to pop up in many metropolitan areas.
“Bollywood-inspired” dance is not only a fast-moving, gyrating sort of hip-hop, its
also fabulous exercise. One of the first Bollywood dance classes to begin teaching this type of dance started in the D.C. area by a company called Dhoonya Dance.
The Dhoonya Dance Performance Company (DDPC)
is a co-ed dance troupe comprised of the Washington area’s most elite and talented South Asian dancers. DDPC has performed at numerous festivals and events and will soon be performing one of their biggest shows of the year at the Takoma Park/ Silver Spring Performing Arts Center in Silver Spring, MD. And when they do, they will be wearing Jewels by Jan barefoot sandals!
How did all this come about, you may ask? I saw the Dhoonya Dancers on the Oprah Winfrey Show a few weeks ago. As I watched them perform I couldn’t help but notice they were barefoot. (When I see performers who are barefoot my brain starts working over time!) Being the eternal optimist and not one to miss an opportunity, I put on my detective hat, found their web site and sent them an e-mail about our sandals.
Fast-forward to today, I have spoken with Priya, one of the Managing Directors, we have gathered all the necessary information and we are currently hard at work handcrafting the foot jewelry they will be wearing at their next big performance! In addition, our beaded foot jewelry will be available for purchase on their products page in just a short time.
Here’s a short You-Tube video to show you what Bollywood dancing is all about!

Saturday was photography day at Jewels-by-Jan so I thought I would share just a peek at a few of the images that were taken that day. Pat ….was…..awesome! Our living room became his studio and he was right at home in front of his Nikon. This was my first experience with a professional photographer and he truly knows his trade.
First of all, did you know that you can wear barefoot sandals WITH SHOES? See for yourself. A lot depends on the sandal design and the type of shoe you choose. A strappy, high-heel sandal works best. Pictured is our Elegant Evening sandal with a dressy black heel. I was ready for some nightlife….except it was 9 o’clock in the morning. But, you get the idea.
For just one more sneak peek, this next image is Desert Moonlight, a design that we’ve had for a few years that customers have loved. Great with your swimwear for the pool, the beach, a cruise or to match a belly dance costume. Heck – just wear it anywhere!

Interesting Cultural Wedding Traditions

Photo Courtesy of Jeff Kolodny Photography
Weddings are occasions of happiness and joy for me. Every wedding I attend brings tears of joy, being the sentimental romantic that I am. I’m a pretty traditional, old fashioned girl and I consider myself pretty knowledgeable in American wedding customs. But living in San Diego, with its diverse cultural population, I’ve learned some very interesting things about how the Vietnamese culture in particular, prepares for THEIR weddings:
DID YOU KNOW……
In the olden days the bride and groom were chosen for each other by the families. This was to keep the upper society intermixed, and keep the poor out of their family line. The union of the couple was not only to bring them together to create a good life, but to establish an alliance between the two families. Nowadays, couples are allowed to choose their own mates, but they still have to gain approval from both families before the union can take place. Wedding preparations are decided upon by the entire family, on both sides, which sometimes makes wedding plans hard to agree upon.
Vietnamese couples will ask only select single women and single men to be in the wedding party. By their definition, single is never-married, never had children, non-divorced. To allow a previously married bridesmaid or groomsman to be part of their wedding party would be considered bad luck.
Vietnamese also believe it is bad luck for anyone to sit on the bed that the newly-married couple will spend their first night as man and wife. Once again, this is considered a sign of bad luck.
Conversely, Vietnamese believe that if the happily-married parents of the bride and the groom select the wedding bands for the couple, it is a sign of good luck and a lasting marriage.
If the Vietnamese couples are not members of a particular faith, the couple will be married first by the parents of the bride in their home, followed by another wedding in which the groom’s parents marry the couple in their home.
Traditionally, the couple must stay apart on the day before to prevent bad luck. On the night before, the bride’s mother will tend her daughter’s hair with several combs. Every comb means something, but the most important is the third comb – at that time she will ask for luck and happiness her new home.
Red is the dominant color in a traditional Vietnamese wedding – it’s considered a lucky color and will lead to a rosy future.
The traditional wedding customs for the Vietnamese are deeply seeded in Chinese rituals and Confucian morality. Each custom is designed to bring eternal happiness to the couple and a strong union between the families. In modern times, some things have changed in these customs, but the Vietnamese people still hold true to honoring some of them.

Read MoreWINDY DAYS & WEDDING VEILS
….just don’t go together. Sounds like that should be a song but it’s so true. While outdoor weddings are truly lovely, there’s nothing too pretty about your wedding veil blowing in your face. And it’s bad enough that this could happen as you say your vows, it can also happen during the picture-taking session.
Now there’s a solution to having to hold down your veil and it’s called Veil Weights. Created by Southern California Wedding Planner, Jill Watson, these beautiful pieces of magnetic jewelry can be easily attached to a bride's veil, thus keeping those veils where they were meant to be. After coordinating many weddings where windy conditions caused her brides' veil to blow here and there, disrupting the ceremony and videos, Jill decided they would be just the solution to a frequent situation at beach weddings. Jill notes that a veil will still have movement but they will keep it from blowing out of control.
The weights come in a package of 6 in four styles - Swarovski crystal in an oval or round shape or Mother of Pearl in oval or round shapes. Since they are magnetic they attach easily to the bottom of a veil. Instructions come with every set and after the wedding you can use them as magnets to hang up your beautiful wedding photos.
Jewels by Jan is excited to offer Jill's veil weights at $59.95 for a set of 6. Be prepared for the unpredictable ocean breezes and and keep in mind that anywhere the wind blows - at the beach, on an island or even in wine country, veil weights will keep veils under control.
